Grades: Pre-school & Kindergarten
Length: 30-40 minutes
After briefly
discussing where the idea for In My Backyard came
from and sharing stories from my backyard, I will read the
book. Either a bookmark or animal mask craft can be
incorporated into the visit.
The Story Behind the Story
Grades: Elementary
Length: 50 minutes
From story spark
to publication, students will discover how In My Backyard
became the book it is. By sharing stories from my backyard,
students will be inspired to write about what they see
around them. The revision process will be addressed via show
and tell items from the publication process. A question and
answer session follows a reading of the book.
The Writer's Word-shop
Grades: Upper Elementary
Length: 50-60 minutes
With my guidance,
students will write their own rhyming stanzas with the
process I used for In My Backyard. The importance of
word choice, rhyme, meter and the revision process will be
addressed. For non-rhyming requested programs, similar
principles will be addressed using alternative practices.
